Interfacial waves with surface elasticity

In this paper we study the existence and uniqueness of interfacial waves in account of surface elasticity at the interface. A sufficient condition for the existence and uniqueness of a subsonic interfacial wave between two elastic half-spaces is obtained for general anisotropic materials. Further, we explicitly calculate the dispersion relations of interfacial waves for interfaces between two s...

Elasticity of an interfacial particle raft

– We study the collective behaviour of a close-packed monolayer of non-Brownian particles at a fluid-liquid interface. Such a particle raft forms a two-dimensional elastic solid and can support anisotropic stresses and strains, e.g. it buckles in uniaxial compression and cracks in tension. We characterise this solid in terms of Young’s modulus and Poisson ratio derived from simple theoretical c...

Mixed finite elements for elasticity

There have been many efforts, dating back four decades, to develop stablemixed finite elements for the stress-displacement formulation of the plane elasticity system. This requires the development of a compatible pair of finite element spaces, one to discretize the space of symmetric tensors in which the stress field is sought, and one to discretize the space of vector fields in which the displ...

Nonconforming Mixed Elements for Elasticity

We construct first order, stable, nonconforming mixed finite elements for plane elasticity and analyze their convergence. The mixed method is based on the Hellinger– Reissner variational formulation in which the stress and displacement fields are the primary unknowns. The stress elements use polynomial shape functions but do not involve vertex degrees of freedom.

Charge screening effects on filament dynamics in xanthan gum solutions

We experimentally investigate the filament dynamics of non-Newtonian drops falling under gravity through air, and report the effects of semiilute concentrations of the polyelectrolyte polymer xanthan gum mixed in 80:20 glycerol/water with varying concentrations of potassium chloride KCl). We find that the addition of 780 ppm xanthan gum to the glycerol/water solvent dramatically increases the d...
